June, 2007

Maile Juranits has earned the position of Class Valedictorian. She is an organized and conscientious student. As Yearbook Editor-in-Chief, she has taken an active role in the production of the 2007 Cardinal Crest. Her responsibilities included ad sales, proofing, layout design, and writing. She was also very active in our athletic program.

This year she has served as president for our local chapter of the California Association FHA-HERO and as ASB vice-president. She is also a member of both the National Honor Society (NHS) and the California Scholarship Federation (CSF). She served as CSF chapter president.

Maile has taken our most rigorous course of study and achieved a top G.P.A. of 3.939. She will be attending the University of California at Davis this fall and plans to major in psychology.

Big Valley High School is pleased to announce the Salutatorian of the Class of 2007 is Devon Barela. Devon has an academic grade point average of 3.926 and is the recipient of numerous academic awards; it is quite evident that he takes pride in doing a good job. As the president of our chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS), Devon has, albeit reluctantly, taken his turn in the spotlight by hosting our academic awards night for two years running. Last year, he was instrumental in organizing the "Every 15 Minutes" program to combat drinking and driving.

Devon is a quiet and reserved student. His artistic side shows a talent for art and a love of music. In his free time, he is even teaching himself the guitar. The field of mathematics holds much fascination for him. He will attend the University of Nevada Reno in the fall and plans to become a high school math teacher.
