Alturas,  Calif…Christmas  Tree Permits to cut Christmas trees for personal use  on the Modoc National Forest are available beginning Nov. 13, and will 
be  sold  through Dec. 23 2007. The permits are $10.00 each and are limited to two per household.

Permits may be purchased at the Modoc National Forest and businesses at the following locations and times:

When purchasing in person, exact change is appreciated. Permits may also be purchased through the mail. Mailed requests for permits must be received by Dec.  14 and should be directed to the nearest Forest Service Office listed above.Please write “Christmas Tree request” on the envelope.

When  purchasing  by  mail,  please include the following: printed name and address  to  which  the  permit(s) are to be mailed; your daytime telephone number;  and  a check or money order for $10.00 per tree, made out to: USDA Forest  Service.  Please provide the name of the person who will be signing the permit and cutting the tree. Be sure your driver’s license number is on the  check.  Please  allow  at least a week for processing of your request. Checks with incorrect amounts will be returned to the sender.

Other  general  rules include, having your permit with you when cutting the tree;  and  you must present it to any Peace Officer or Forest Officer upon request.   Attach the permit to the trunk of the tree between the limbs and seal  it so that it must be broken when removed.  The permit must be signed and secured on the tree at all times while transporting. Trees must be less than  six  inches in diameter. Stumps must be no taller than 12 inches. And no  topping of trees is permitted. Other rules and safety tips are provided with permits.
