Six representatives of the Big Valley Chapter FHA-HERO attended the State Leadership Meeting of the California Association FHA-HERO April 28-May 1 at the Radisson Hotel and Fresno Convention Center.
Members and advisor attending this statewide meeting were: Ms. Sharon Yonehara, who served as State Competitive Recognition Events Consultant, Maile Juranits who competed in Salad Preparation, Silvia Moran who competed in Apparel Construction, Leah Ackley who competed in Chapter Activities Manual, Kristy Meade who competed in Prepared Speech, Katie Lewis who competed in Menu Planning and Table Display, and Tierney Carmichael who competed in Creed Recitation.
The Big Valley Chapter received the gold level State Superior Chapter. Silvia received her Region Degree. In the Competitive Recognition Events (CRE's) Maile received a third place trophy in her event and Katie placed first in Menu Planning and Table Display. Katie received a first place trophy and $100.00 in cash.
The theme for the three-day meeting was "Illuminating Tomorrow, Today." Speakers included "Resilience: How Leaders Find Light When Life Gets Dark," by motivational speaker Scott Greenberg and officer reflections by each of the 2006-07 State Officer Team. Meeting activities included general sessions, Competitive Recognition Event State Finals, career workshops, and the election of the 2007-08 State Officers. The representatives returned home with many new ideas for developing leadership programs and planning chapter projects.
FHA-HERO is a national vocational student organization for you men and women interested in or enrolled in home economics education programs. More than 4,000 students participate in leadership development activities throughout the state. In California, FHA-HERO is sponsored by the Agriculture and Home Economics Education Unit, California Department of Education.
